City of Manassas Park Provides Update on HAWK Signal Project to Improve Pedestrian Safety

Manassas Park, VA – The City of Manassas Park is providing residents with an update on the installation of a new High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) Signal along Manassas Drive near the intersection of Valor Way. The project represents another investment in creating a safer, more connected community for all.

Once completed, the HAWK signal will provide pedestrians with a protected crossing in the downtown area while improving driver awareness at the crossing location. The signal is expected to be operational by the end of 2026.

Unlike a traditional traffic signal, a HAWK signal is activated only when a pedestrian is present. When activated, it alerts motorists to stop, allowing pedestrians to safely cross before traffic resumes.

Construction continues to progress, with several key milestones scheduled over the coming months:

HAWK Signal Project Milestones

  • August 3–4:

Final foundation work, including drilling and concrete placement was completed.

  • August 17:

    Contractor remobilization.

  • September 22 – November 6:

Installation of signal infrastructure, including poles, signal heads, controller cabinet, and system testing.

  • November 10 – December 24:

Final project work, including sign installation, inspections, signal activation, and site restoration.

  • December 31:

Project completion and full operation of the HAWK signal.

During construction, motorists and pedestrians may experience intermittent lane closures or traffic adjustments. The City encourages travelers to use caution around workers and follow posted signage.
